  Making Use of Your Time

Everybody wastes time.Instead of doing their lessons, students watch television,or go and enjoy themselves outside the campus(校园).Writers neglect their work, and wander up and down in the room making cups of coffee and daydreaming. They all have good intentions, but they keep putting off the moment when they must start work.As a consequence, they begin to feel guilty, and then waste even more time wishing they had not allowed themselves to be distracted.

When someone else is organizing our time for us,as,for instance, during lessons or working hours,we do not necessarily work more efficiently, but at least we are subject to the discipline of a routine. It is when we are responsible for organizing our own time that the need for self-discipline arises.Self-employed people, particularly those engaged in such creative activities as writing, can only survive, let alone prosper,if they can organize their time efficiently.

I know two writers who seem to me to have got to grips with(正确解决) the problem, but in quite different ways.Bob is extremely methodical(井井有条).He arrives at his office at 9 a.m. and is creative until 12∶30.At 2 p.m.,he returns to his desk and is creative until 5 p.m.,when he goes home and switches off until the following morning.Alan would deny that you can regulate your creativity in this way,by the clock as it were.He works in inspired bursts, often missing meals and sleep in order to get down on paper the ideas that are in his head.Such periods of intense activity are usually followed by days of laziness, when he walks around his flat, listening to Mozart or flicking through magazines.

Their places of work reflect their styles.Bob's books are neatly arranged on the shelves by his desk.He can always find the books he wants, and there is not a single book in his office which is not directly relevant to his work.Alan,on the other hand, has books and magazines all over the place, some on shelves, some in piles on the floor and the table, still some even on or under the bed.

Both Bob and Alan have managed to organize their lives in such a way that they are able to produce work of very high quality.Obviously, each works in the way that suits his character, and it would be foolish to take either as a model. All the same, there is a lot we can learn from them. For example,Bob has the excellent idea of setting targets for each week.As long as he is “on target,”he will occasionally take one afternoon off for relaxation without feeling guilty;he deliberately plans to waste time for recovery from tiredness. It seems to be a much better idea to relax and enjoy your time-wasting,rather than to feel guilty about it both at the time and afterwards.

51.The author implies that a person who has wasted time should not

  A. waste any more time regretting it.

  B. feel uneasy or blame others.

  C. avoid being distracted a second time.

  D. try to make up for the lost time.

52.Even if a writer can organize his time efficiently,he

  A. may not achieve much success.

  B. is unlikely to produce high quality work.

  C. still can't work creatively or productively.

  D. is less productive than people with regular jobs.

53.Through the example of Bob and Alan, the author wants to show

  A. self-discipline is the most important in the profession of writing.

  B. creativity can never be regulated by devices such as a clock.

  C. one should not feel uneasy when wasting time once a target is hit.

  D. not bothering with small matters is a work style rather than a shortcoming.

54.To make use of our time,we should

  A. keep warning ourselves against wasting time.

  B. set targets for each time unit.

  C. deliberately plan to waste time.

  D. work hard while working and enjoy ourselves while playing.

55.The author suggests that wasting time can sometimes be

  A. necessary. B. shameful.

  C. productive. D. enjoyable.

  It's Mugger's Game In Manhattan

Martin had lived in New York for 40 years and never been mugged once. This did not make him confident — on the contrary,it terrified him.The way he saw it,he was now the most likely person in Manhattan to get mugged next.

“What are the odds(可能性) in favour of me getting mugged?”he asked his friend Lenny.

“How much are you willing to bet?”said Lenny, who was a compulsive gambler.

“Oh,come on,this is too important to bet on!”

“Nothing is too important to bet on,”said Lenny, shocked. That was the end of their friendship.

“How do you think I can avoid getting mugged?”Martin asked his friend Grace.Grace had not been outside her apartment in five years,as a sure-fire(保险的) way of avoiding being mugged. It had failed;someone had broken in and mugged her.

“I've no idea,Martin,”she said.“Most of these guys are on drugs anyway, and they need the money for their addiction(毒瘾).”

This gave Martin an idea.If the muggers only needed the money for drugs, why didn't he offer them drugs instead? Then possibly they would be so grateful that they wouldn't harm him.Through some rich friends he knew he bought small quantities of different drugs. He had never touched the stuff himself,so he had to label them carefully to make sure he didn't get them mixed up.

One day he was walking in a part of Central Park he shouldn't have been in (the part where there is grass and trees)when three men leapt out at him.One was black, one was Puerto Rican and one was Caucasian(白种人).Well,at least mugging is being integrated he thought.

“You want drugs?”he cried.“I've got drugs!Anything you want you can have.Just name it.But don't touch me!”

The three men let go of him respectfully.

“We almost made a big mistake there,”said one of them.“This guy's a pusher.Hurt him and we could have the Mafia(黑手党) down on us.Let's see what you got, mister.”Somewhat to his surprise,Martin found himself displaying his wares to his customers.Even more to his surprise,he found himself accepting money for the drugs, much more than he'd paid for them.

“How come you guys have all this money?”He said.“Why are you out mugging when you have money?”

  “Well,we're not muggers,”said the Caucasian,embarrassed.“We're out-of-work actors.”

“I thought out-of-work showbiz(演艺) people always became waiters or barmen,”said Martin.

“Right. But there are so many showbiz people in catering now that you can't get work as waiters. So we had to get work as muggers.”

When Martin got home,he bought some more drugs from his friend.Pretty soon he sold them to some more muggers.

Shortly after that he found he was spending more and more time pushing drugs, and making more and more money at it.Being afraid of muggings had turned him into a professional drug-pusher.

One day a man leapt out at him and grabbed him.

“You want drugs?”said Martin.“I've got drugs.”

  “I want money,”said a familiar voice.

  “Lenny!”cried Martin.“How're you doing?”

  “Badly,”said Lenny.“I lost everything gambling.”

He hit Martin on the head and took his money, wallet and all his credit cards, leaving the little packets of white powder behind.

Moral:It's no use offering drugs to a money addict(上瘾的人).

A.everyone gets mugged at least once in forty years.

B.he had been mugged more than once before.

C.most people in New York get mugged sooner or later.

D.there were too many people like Lenny in New York.

A.he decided he could get drugs more easily than he could earn money.

B.he believed most muggers were more interested in drugs than in money.

C.he found himself having more drugs than money.

D.he thought most muggers didn't need the money.

58.When he was finally mugged,he wasn't harmed because

A.the muggers found he didn't have any money on him.

B.the muggers were actually playing a practical joke on him.

C.the muggers were impressed by his readiness to co-operate with them.

D.the muggers thought he had connections with and was protected by the Mafia.

59.Well,at least mugging is being integrated he thought. The sentence shows Martin thought at least

A.there was no racial discrimination in mugging.

B.mugging involved people from different races.

C.muggers were united as one in their crime.

D.people from different cultures were equal in mugging.

60.Martin was finally unable to save himself from being mugged probably because Lenny
